Statement of Intent - current final major project

I brought this vision into the world, and I will take it away when I leave.

Progress and Achievement
Partaking in this art foundation has enabled me to develop my own language within my work and highlighted how important research, development and experiments are. The environment surrounding me triggers ideas and thoughts in my head, which are contextualised through examples and feedback of work from my peers and tutors. Working in various workshops has and will massively facilitate the manipulation of ideas when reflecting and developing concepts to reach realistic outcomes.

Context
Product and Spatial design has noticeably opened my eyes to the environment around me, where possible I challenge designs to improve our surroundings. Geometric shapes have been apparent and noticeable as a personal trigger for ideas, particularly triangles. I have focused my energy and concentrated on designing in response to space. Zaha Hadid’s work has been incredibly influential in terms of looking at vast structures and at a wide range of materials. Currently in the middle of my ‘urban intervention’ I have been looking at Anish Kapoor’s work with mirrors, which I feel is a good cross over to this project. Jason Bruges and UnitedVisualArtists have stimulated the idea that runs in conjunction to space, which is light. The way these three artists create illusions and invite visitors to interact with their work has brought a new dimension of ideas to mine.

Project Proposal, Aims, Methods and Realisation
My initial ideas for this project are to explore light, mirrors and space. I will experiment with a space where illusions exhaust the eye, mirrors reflecting light rays and casting shadows highlighting features within that space. I will collect and gather inspiration and information from London and Singapore in terms of structure and spaces. Gallery visits will include the Design Museum, Anish Kapoor’s ‘Turning the World Upside Down’, 'Emerging Architecture’ and 'Masterworks: Architecture’ (Royal Academy). Basic research such as information about the designers and architects, exhibition details and locations of sites will be from primary research. I aim to play around with the idea of space and mirrors in a space to highlight a certain point in the room or manipulate the size of it. I will explore the possibility of creating an illusion of a wall or a divide in space using lights. Geometric shapes will be fluent throughout and highly emphasised in the final outcome. I intend to make 3D models of ideas initially using wood and Perspex but I understand that the use of materials will change after making test models and reflecting on how successful I think they are. By the end of the six weeks I will have a visual representation, worksheets documenting the process and a final model for my proposal.

Evaluation
Routine consultations with my tutor and peers will mean that I don’t get bias feedback. I intend to create a questionnaire and document the results in my logbook where I will also record and reflect the process of getting to a final outcome. I’ll keep a sketchbook full of photos of the process, influences, experiments, exhibitions and any changes in ideas. I will be organised and stick to my day-by-day planner to maximise my time and execute this final major project to the best of my ability.

Siam Ocean World, Bangkok (filmed 20th February 2011) Initial inspiration for current final major project at Camberwell

About Me.

I want to fulfil my design ambitions; leaving London behind and moving into a new environment, a new city, will bring new ideas and inspiration to my thoughts and work. I feel that Nottingham has the facilities that will enable me to work to the best of my ability and channel my creativity.

On my foundation, I found that I became aware of how artists use space in the context of fine art. The Choreographing you exhibition at the Hayward Gallery was particularly eye opening, in so far as it included works that employed the use of space, light and material to evoke different responses.  How an audience reacts to a space is intriguing. Certain elements can provoke extremely varied responses, which is something I hope to explore. The structure and layout of a space is particularly important when considering how this space may be filled. I want to discover the relationship between, the structural design of a space and how it affects the interior furnishings and fittings.

On the course, I want to design new interiors and furnishings, build up a portfolio of work finished to a professional standard, to learn skills that I can and will use during and after the course and lastly to apply my own individual visual language to interior architecture and design.

Ideas from shapes and features of jellyfish

Initial ideas of buildings and possible window creations or manifestations inspired by drawings and recordings from features of jellyfish.

I visited ‘Siam Ocean World’ (largest aquarium in South-East Asia) whilst in Bangkok. Jellyfish became a fascination and sparked ideas towards my final major project. The top of a jellyfish, the bubble acts as its body as well as its' brain. The idea of creating a space using this shape and inspiration from jellyfish is what I am currently pursuing.

Inspiration from material

Drawings of inspiration from this material using the idea that holes in the material could be a space and experimenting with geometric shapes mirrored by the sequins and beads that the holes are surrounded by.
